Welcome to your CranioSacral Therapy Session at Vital Core Healing!
CranioSacral Therapy is a powerful, yet very gentle, light-touch approach that releases tension in your central nervous system, so that your entire body can relax, self-adjust, and naturally free itself of pain and dysfunction. CranioSacral Therapy helps to identify and treat the root cause of your pain, illness and other dysfunctions, not just the symptoms. All you need to do is lie down on a massage table in loose, comfortable clothes and relax. How easy is that!
Your session will last 60 minutes.
During your session, you will experience very gentle, nurturing touch of 5 grams (one nickel’s worth) of pressure, or less. The purpose of such light touch is to not activate your defensive mechanisms, such as conscious or unconscious guarding. This delicate touch also allows me to sense deeply into your tissue, so that I can help you locate restrictions and facilitate their release. If you need even lighter touch at any given moment, please let me know.
If distracting thoughts from your day enter your mind, you can focus on the slow inhale and exhale or your breath—this will help you relax and clear your mind.
As your body works to self-correct through its unique healing process, you may naturally experience the sensations of heat, pulsing, softening, pain, tingling, shaking out, twitching, lengthening, opening, fluid movement, spreading, settling in your tissue. These are positive signs that your body is working to find its balance. Such sensations typically occur during your session, but also may occur hours later, and sometimes days later. Other sensations you may experience during your session include lightness or floating or heaviness. You may fall asleep. You may so deeply relax that you feel like you cannot move your body but are still somewhat awake. You may be quiet or may want to talk about the sensations, images or memories that may come up as your body self-adjusts.
Sometimes you may feel pain that you thought had disappeared long ago; this means that it was just dormant and has surfaced now be addressed and move on out.
Feeling emotions is possible, as well; no matter how much we talk or think through life experiences, your tissue may not have caught up and is trying to do so now.
Letting me know what sensations come up during a session can be helpful to track your body’s efforts to self-correct, but it is not required. You may prefer to quietly relax and savor your new awareness of your body.
Please let me know if you need any extra support to keep your body comfortable during your session, such as a pillow under your neck, or a bolster under your knees. You may need to sit up or lie on your side, or lift a leg or arm, or you may need a break to use the restroom. If you are not comfortable, you cannot relax, and if you cannot relax, your body cannot as easily get to the important work of healing from within.
After Your Session—Gentle Integration
It is important that you drink lots of water and other decaffeinated fluids in the days that follow your session to help your body eliminate toxins that have been stirred up in the tissue. Not drinking extra fluids can result in your temporarily feeling as if you are coming down with the flu.
In the days that follow, your body will continue to integrate all the self-corrections it accomplished during session. To support this integration, it is important to be gentle with yourself and listen to your body’s signals on what it needs. You may feel fatigued, which means you need to rest. Or perhaps you are energized and need to move. The key is not to fight your body, such as forcing it stay up late when you feel exhausted.
Take notice of any subtle or obvious changes in your body. Your body’s response to its self-corrective efforts is unique. It is possible that you may not notice anything or you may notice all your tissue come alive. Sometimes change occurs on a deeper, more subtle, cellular level than what you can consciously experience. As your body awareness grows, you may notice those subtleties show themselves more clearly.
Sometimes you may feel pain, a headache, other physical sensations, or even emotions after your session. These sensations are positive signs that your body is self-correcting and balancing. CranioSacral Therapy disorganizes existing patterns of compensation, maladaptation and dysfunction. As this occurs, old symptoms or new symptoms can arise from such patterns. Your body then adjusts to find more efficient and effective function. Sometimes your body may feel a little out of balance until it integrates its efforts and settles into its new place. How long that takes is unique to each individual. Depending on how you feel, this may be a time to consider returning for another session sooner than later, to support your body’s continuing self-corrective healing process.
I will follow up with a phone call 24 to 48 hours day after your session. I am interested to know how you are feeling physically, mentally and emotionally and if you have any questions.
Number of Sessions
How many sessions do you require to determine whether CranioSacral Therapy is making a difference for you?
That depends on your unique life experience, your body, your tissue, the conditions you are coping with, your lifestyle and your self-care activities. Some clients make dramatic progress with the first session; others notice improvement after three or four sessions; others take longer. CranioSacral Therapy helps to identify and address the root cause of your pain, illness and other dysfunctions, not just the symptoms. CranioSacral Therapy helps to improve function by following your body’s natural ability to heal and find its own route to health. Sometimes that requires extra patience. Based on your feedback after your first appointment, I can suggest a number of sessions for you to consider exploring to see if CranioSacral Therapy is making a difference for you.
Support to help you feel your best so you can live your best life
My loyalty is to you, to help you reclaim your vibrancy. I know the value of how holistic therapies complement each other as well as traditional approaches. Thus, I may suggest that you consider incorporating chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, or other therapies outside of my practice to support your body’s self-correcting efforts, so that you can feel your best and live your best life. For example, if the muscles at the junction of your upper neck and skull are so locked with tension that CranioSacral Therapy cannot be performed to facilitate your body’s structural balancing, I may suggest massage to help loosen those areas first, so that the deeper, CranioSacral Therapy can follow.
